Satire Examples

Satire is a technique employed by writers to expose and criticize foolishness and corruption of an individual or a society by using humor, irony, exaggeration or ridicule. It intends to improve the humanity by criticizing its follies and foibles. Although satire is usually meant to be funny, its greater purpose is often constructive social criticism, using wit as a weapon and as a tool to draw attention to both particular and wider issues in society. A satirist can direct the satire toward one individual, a whole country or even the world.

A common feature of satire is strong irony or sarcasm, but parody, burlesque, exaggeration, juxtaposition, comparison, analogy, and double entendre are all frequently used in satirical speech and writing. Satire is nowadays found in many artistic forms of expression, including literature, plays, commentary, television shows, as well as some music. Most political cartoons which we witness every day in newspapers and magazines are examples of satire. These cartoons criticize some recent actions of political figures in a comical way. Some shows on television are examples of satire like "The Daily Show", "The Colbert Report", and the animated series "Southpark". These shows claim to target what they think are unjust political and social viewpoints.
